Making the Most of your Craft Show Display Part 2

Making the Most of your Craft Show Display Part 2

So you have decided to promote your business doing craft shows but now you are wondering “how do I make the most out of my precious 10 X 10 area?” The key to this is to attract attention and bring those customers into your booth!

Planning out your booth before hand is a key factor to the successful layout of your booth. Using items found at home is an inexpensive method. Look for unique pieces to incorporate into your display; furniture pieces, shelving, Items with visual interest. Layers and stacking product keep interest high.

Color plays a big factor as well. What decorations are you using? Is it holiday themed? Tie decorations around that. Harvest time? Easter, Valentines, Bridal? All of these have certain colors associated with them. Of course you do not have to go that route. Complete opposite decorations are attractive as well. Shocking pink or bright yellow would definitely set you apart from the crowd. Make sure that you incorporate your products however and pick up color schemes from them.

Interesting fabrics are a great tool to use as well. Be careful of clashing prints though. You do not any busy displays. People cannot focus on any one thing and will walk away.

The flow of traffic in and out of your booth is important. You don’t want it to seem crowded but you do want to utilize your space completely. You want to be able to have someone come in and talk with you, see your merchandise easily, fill out information sheets. Comfortable and inviting is the ambience that you are striving for.

Your mix of product is equally important as all of the above. You do not have to bring your whole inventory, just a representation of your line or the products geared to the event theme. Taking orders is definitely ok to do at these shows. Don’t feel you have to bring everything. That will be too much work for you and you will be less inclined to want to continue these types of shows.

Keeping your event set up simple yet attractive will ensure interest from your potential customers. Being a unique vendor in set up and display will encourage a great shopping experience for them as well. Above all, Have Fun!

Why Use Craft Shows in Your Direct Sales Business?

Why Use Craft Shows in Your Direct Sales Business? Part 1

The greatest thing about home businesses and the direct sales type of business is the flexibility in how you can market your products. We are not relegated to one type of selling so therefore the opportunities are endless! Brick and mortars stores are somewhat limited as they wait for the customers to find them. We on the other hand, go and find ours.

One of my favorite ways to increase customers, hostesses, business partners and newsletter signups is through craft shows and expos. Looking at the venue of the show, it becomes apparent that this IS your target market ~ Female; usually with extra disposable income And looking for unique products. All of these attributes fit our business perfectly.

Choosing the right venue will be important to your success. Make sure the show is in your market area. Traveling 50 miles to do a show looking for customers may not be a good idea if you have to deliver products after the show. Think about parties as well. If your hostess is an hour away and then her guests are a no show Or maybe you get 5 bookings, Are you willing to keep driving to that area to service those customers? Set yourself a radius of how far you are willing to travel.

Another thing to check out when choosing the right show to do is the amount of the booth. Figure out how much you have to sell to re coop your expenses. If you are doing a one day show for $150 and you sell $2 – $5 items, you are going to have to move a heck of a lot of items to break even.

Make sure that you are selling product that goes along with the theme of the show before writing that check for the entry fees. Specialty shows like scrapbooking or quilt shows may not be the best return for you if you are selling makeup. Several years ago I did a Home and Garden type of show and while my product line fit in wonderfully; there was a cosmetic company there. She was not moving a heck of a lot of product and did not do very well at all. I am actually surprised the promoters allowed her in. So make sure you are not wasting your time with the wrong show.

Check to see how long the show has been in existence. What type of turn out do they get? Sometimes doing a newly formed show is a good risk if it is a local show. Traveling great lengths to go to a new venue may not be something I would recommend. Also check on how they advertise the show. Very important in that you can have a huge amount of vendors attending, but if the event is not publicized well, you will not so well.

Overall, craft shows are an awesome tool for your business if they are researched and handled properly. Building your business in unique ways is the key to the longevity with your business.

Gearing up for the Spring Shows

2008 is almost in the bag and that means that the Spring shows are right around the corner.

What are you working on for spring to entise your buyers?

What is going to show beautifully that a shopper has to have?

What is unique in the marketplace that will have buyers flocking to your display with cash in hand?

The answer to this is inside you. I know it sounds crazy. But people will buy what is beautiful, different and definately what is displayed wonderfully. When you go shopping at the store you will see the same types of things over and over. But the one you buy is usually the one that is displayed in a special way.

I don’t have the answer as to what the next hot trend will be. I do see a lot of exquisite work, recycled items and natural items. The run of the mill purchased things are going by the wayside, unless they are priced cheap.

Take some time to develop your display for spring. what can you do that is different and unique? Lets get creative! But most of all, Have Fun!

Building A Successful Craft Show Booth

Building A Successful Craft Show Booth

Posted By Lisa Akers On September 20, 2008 @ 6:10 pm In Crafts and Hobbies | No Comments

If you attend craft shows as a vendor, you’ve probably experienced this: people walk by your booth, take a peek inside, and then walk on. Even if you do your best to greet them and invite them to browse, they smile politely and keep moving. How frustrating! I know that I’ve been there myself. I know I have great products, if people would just take a moment to come in, I know I could make a sale!

There are a few basic principles that you can use to make your booth more appealing and attractive to those “browsers.” After all, once you get them in the booth, you can find out what they need and if you can meet that need. Plus, you have a chance to talk with them and make them feel welcome!

Craft show booths are notoriously small retail spaces that have a lot of competition. Even if there are no other crafters in your specialty, there are many other vendors who all want to attract buyers. You have about 2-4 seconds to attract a buyer’s attention before they walk past your booth. That’s a big demand in such a small time. The best way to do that is to create a single focal point item that will draw them in, or at least slow them down. This could be a featured item, or a large photo, or even a demonstration. Whatever best shows your products is what you want to choose.

Now, take that featured item and create some emotion around it. Show a photo of someone using or wearing it and having fun. Show the item as it could be used – with seasonal or even household items. Set this display in the front of your booth and put it at eye level, about five feet high. No one will want to look up or down to see your featured item. It has to grab their attention as they glance around the room.

Once you have their attention, it’s important to keep it! You have to stop their glance from moving to the next booth. One great way to do this is with booth dividers. These are solid walls of color between your booth and the next one. If your craft show doesn’t have dividers between the booths, make your own. It’s easy to do with some PVC pipe and rod-pocket curtains. At a minimum, make one for the back of your booth. Use a solid color that complements your products or uses the colors from your logo. Hang your sign on this divider and maybe some large photos of your products or you making them. If your focal point display doesn’t catch their attention, large photos are a great way to show what you do.

OK, so now you have piqued their attention. What next? Chances are, they will have made eye contact with you. Invite them into the booth by asking them if they are looking for anything special. If they are, great! Point them in the right direction. If not, then ask if they have ever seen something like your focal point item before. Whatever you can do to keep their attention on you! Show them your favorite item, or the most popular item. Whatever you do, don’t just ask them to take a look around. Point them to something specific. If you are general and vague, they will keep browsing. If you are specific, they can see your handwork and expertise in products they might not have considered.

I’d like to add a word about booth layouts. Most booths are 10?x10?. This is pretty small, and crafters with many products are tempted to lay them all out and crowd in as many different things as they can. I’d really encourage you to not do that. Show a few products in a grouping and then leave some space. Show another grouping, then leave some space. Your mind will remember things if there is a gap between items. If you have piles and racks of items, the browser will keep on looking. Keep some items in storage under the table or in the back of the booth so you can meet a variety of needs.

Once your “browser” has decided to become a “buyer,” then it’s time to make sure they have everything they need. Point out another item you have in a similar color or style. Identify any accessories that go along with their selection. Ask them if you can contact them to follow up and see how they like it. Get a way to contact them and then you can let them know when you have new products, a new idea, or are going to be at another show. Your existing customers are more likely to buy from you again!

If, after all your efforts, the person keeps walking, try to ask them why they are leaving. Say, “Is there something I can do to help you find something today?” This makes you sound helpful and opens the door to talking about your product. When they respond, you can answer their question (if you know the answer) and then say, “Is there something about my products that I could do better?” This gives them a chance to be helpful back to you! Everyone likes to help. This will give you valuable marketing information for future events.

One last bit of advice. Find someone who can sit in your booth for a moment while you walk around the show. Notice which booths catch your attention and make a mental note as to why. Notice which ones are busy and see if they have an idea you can adapt to your own display. Most of all, make contacts with your fellow crafters. We’re all in the business of creating, and it’s nice to know there are others who share your passion and zeal!

Talking Prim

I just love Prim crafts. From the darling fonts to the clip art and printables, I love Prim. I love looking at all of the crafts people create with Prim designs. The black crows, berry vines, stars, annies, salt box houses. You know what I mean.

Unfortunately where I live it is not popular and you rarely see Prim anywhere. I always wanted to have a craft business using Prim items, but I am afraid it would not be successful because this area is not known for it. Would they even “Get It”? I did get some stars and berry vines for decorations for my display. And I also had special prim price lables and biz cards made for my candles. Red Stars with Berry vines and checkerboard border on kraft stock. Whoopie. LOL

Well I guess my small doses of Prim will have to do me for now until I can figure out how to introduce it to the world over here. Hmmmmmmm

Build your Mailing List

Here is a great article for building your craft business newsletter. It has great tips to help you build your list. Enjoy!

Do you have a crafting business? Here is a tip for building your mailing list.
By: Olde Village Depot

Do you have a mailing list, but are struggling to gain quality subscribers? Building your mailing list is the lifeline of your business. Your subscribers are the ones who will keep coming back to you for more information, so it is very important that you attract targeted subscribers.

One of the most effective ways I have found to gain new subscribers is to offer them something for free. There are several items you can offer your subscribers that won’t cost you a penny! You are probably wondering “What can I offer my subscribers that won’t cost me money?” This is where I have a few suggestions for you to try.

Here are 5 freebies to offer your subscribers.
(My examples are for crafting businesses, however the same principles can be applied to any business.)

1. Free Patterns

If you have a crafting site, the simple gesture of offering a free pattern can work miracles for your business. Just by offering a simple pattern you will gain quality traffic and in return gain targeted subscribers. If you don’t have your own pattern to offer for free, try asking one of your crafting buddies if you can share one of their patterns.

2. Create a free e-book or e-course.

Here is an example: We asked several primitive crafters to write articles for us on a topic related to Primitive Decorating. Included in the articles, were each authors bio with a link to their websites. We compiled all of these articles into a free e-course. To gain access to the articles you had to subscribe to our mailing list. We promoted our e-course on several forums
and each author promoted the course on their website. Within one month we had gained over 600 targeted subscribers. It was a lot of work, but the return was phenomenal.

3. How to Articles

How to articles are great, because you will gain tons of traffic. How to articles provide quality information that will keep your visitors returning to your site to learn more.
Ex. How to make a soy candle. How to attach hair to a dolls head. How to tea/coffee stain muslin. The ideas here are endless.

4. Craft Tips

If you know a craft tip that will make a craft easier, why not share it with your visitors. If you don’t know any craft tips, maybe a friend can help. There are a lot of other crafters out there that would be happy to share some craft tips with you.

5. Free recipes

Let’s face it, the majority of visitors to a craft web site are going to be women. We all love recipes and would love to find new and exciting dishes to try.

These are just a few ideas for building those subscribers. Implement one or all of these ideas to your website and you will see an improvement in your mailing list.

Weathering the Weather

With fall coming rather quickly, it is time to gather all of the rainly day items needed for your craft show.  A friend of mine told me she was at a show in the fall and it started sleeting.  YAY

But that is something we need to be prepared for.  If your canopy has sides, get them cleaned,  check for repairs needed and put them in a tote.  Also include extra bungee cords and zip ties to hold the sides.  If you don’t have sides, get to pricing them now and order them before you need them.

Protecting your product is a biggee as well.  Extra tarps can help protect your stuff in a downpour as well as being used on the ground to protect from wet grass.  Make sure to have spikes or something similar to keep them in the ground.  If you have extra product, think about using plastic totes instead of cardboard to transport your items to the shows.  Wet grass and rain will make moving things messy.

Also don’t forget your personal rainy day gear or if it cools down quickly where you live, your sweaters and gloves.

Being prepared will make your show a winner even if you get a bit soggy.  Hard core shoppers don’t mind a bit of rain, so be ready and keep that smile on your face!
